Meaning of the term
- name of the term :
Nucleotides
Summary:
Nucleotides are the basic building blocks of our genetic material, DNA and RNA. They are therefore present in all body cells, including adequate amounts in breast milk. The body has the ability to produce nucleotides itself. However, synthesis requires significant energy and in phases of rapid growth or during illness, the body's own production is not sufficient. The additional intake of nucleotides through food is therefore necessary to ensure an optimal supply.
Function:
Nucleotides and their metabolites play key roles in many biological processes, such as the building of proteins and the transfer of energy between cells. They are also indispensable in the regulation of hormone and fat metabolism. Nucleotides promote a healthy digestive and immune system; they also interact in the sleep-wake rhythm.
